Why a Practice Routine is the Key to Musical Success

Updated: Apr 12

Piano practice is a word full of emotion and connotations - mostly bad ones! It creates visions of drills, boring repetitions, endless scales, difficulty and isolation. But it doesn't have to be this way.

In concerts, exams and performances for family and friends, it's not the 'talented' students who shine, but those students who have mastered the skill of efficient and effective preparation. Unlike 'musical talent' which some believe you are either born with, or not, learning how to prepare and practice well is a set of skills that can be learned and used by everyone. And it has so many benefits.

Why practice expertise is a superpower

  1. Getting better at piano practice not only helps you sound better, but you can get more done in less time. Why? Because you remove time-wasting activities, and have a whole range of practice tools designed specifically for the task at hand.

  2. This accelerates your progress. You can do the same amount of practice each day, but cover twice as much ground.

  3. Quality practice supercharges your weekly music lessons too. You and your teacher can focus on making exciting new discoveries and connections, and learning much more music.

"However good you think you might be as a musician, you're actually much better. The difference is going to be in how you practice." Philip Johnston
